Winter is that time of year when the air is at it's dryest especially the further north you go. Dry air can result in dry skin, itchy & watery eyes, sore throats, and a number of irritations that go along with it. I found a site that has a complete guide to buying a house humidifier and has a lot of information regarding this subject.
There is a page on comparing the two main types of humidifiers which are warm and cool types. The difference between the two is exactly as it sounds. You will need to decide if you want warm moist air, or cool moist air? This decision is usually made on personal preference, but there are some fundamental differences in the way each type works that might also effect your decision.
In general, warm air humidifiers make less noise, but are only suitable for single rooms. Cool air humidifiers can potentially cover a larger area, but as they have moving parts they also tend to make more noise. Every humidifier is different. If you understand how they work, the choice of which one to buy should be much easier.
If you are looking for relief from the winter dry then you might want to check out this site for more information.
