Winter bird care

For those of us in the northern reaches of the united states, winter bird feeding can be an important part of the survival of your local species. So when you're tired of watching the snowflakes fall this winter, why not look for colorful birds in your backyard? By putting up a bird feeder in your yard, you can attract wild birds to a spot where you can easily see them. This activity can open up a whole new world of excitement right outside your window and you can do it from the warmth of your home.
Not only is bird feeding fun, it also helps birds through harsh winter conditions when food may be hard to find or buried under the deep snow. Once the ground is heavily covered in snow, it become increasingly more difficult for the over wintering birds to find the staple foods they need to survive. Don’t be discouraged if it takes time for birds to find your feeder. Your location, the abundance of natural food nearby, and the weather can all affect your bird feeding efforts.

If you are interested in sering a larger variety of birds, you can put out a number of feeders with different seed stocks in them too. For woodpeckers, the favorites are always suet, either natural from your local meat market or the packaged versions with seeds embedded in them. Having one feeder with sunflower, one with mixed seeds, and one with thistle seed, will typically bring you a number of different birds to watch. Have some fun, add a
bird feeder out side a window and help the local wildlife in the process.
