Page rank drops in the search engines

Have noticed that you page ranks are falling and you can't figure out why? I had this happen to me about 3 months ago on my main website at http://www.wm8c.com/ and even though I have been able to regain most of my traffic since then, I am still being penalized by Google at this point both in page rank and in smart pricing for AdSense. I was at a PR5 and am now at PR4 although the prediction tools show getting back to PR5 soon and hopefully up from there. So why do I think that is?

Well the honest answer to that question is that I'm not totally sure at this point. I can how ever tell you about something I did at the time that I think contributed to it. I got greedy and I decided to add a bunch of recycled content for AdSense use on my site. What's wrong with that you ask? Nothing in itself, except that I broke two rules that I should have avoided. First I used PLR content, and second I added about 3000 pages within a few days which sent the robots into an indexing frenzy and later a de-indexing frenzy, which included some from our home business pages so it was a double whammy on sales and earnings.

By the time this all shook out, I had lost some prime pages from the Google index, and fell in earnings to about half of my November levels. It's taken about 3 months to get back near where I was. Two things I will suggest, add content slowly, no more than maybe 10 - 20 pages at a time, and if you are going to use non-original content, try to avoid adding them in a well established site as sub-directories or sub domains. It can only degrade the main domain and ratings. No one totally understands all of this but we can learn from changes we make as I have on this one.

Adsense and Graphics - latest update from my own sites

After more than two weeks and no more pictures or graphics by my AdSense blocks, my CTR's have only dropped about 1% since removal of them. Now were I getting 1000 clicks a day, I might be upset about that, but since my traffic at my main site is only about 350 uniques a day, that amounts to about 3 clicks a day potentially lost. Were those clicks each worth a dollar it would add up quickly though.

I find it interesting that Google feels that surfers might be fooled into clicking on an ad by using "misleading" graphics. By using "good blending" are we not trying to "fool" them, which is fine to do and in fact Google even tells you how to do it? If that were not the case, then ad blocks with huge pink borders would work just as well as the good blending techniques do in "fooling" someone into clicking on an ad would not be done by all of us using the program?

To me the pictures and graphics were nothing more than attention grabbers like ad banners (before the advent of banner blindness) do with bright colors, flashing graphics, etc. You never thought that you weren't clicking on an ad, but it "caught your attention", and I feel in most cases short of the "pointing arrows or click me to support this site" type graphics, it was no different by lining graphics up with the ad blocks.

It was simply a eye catcher to say to the visitor, "hey I'm an ad but I might have what your looking for so look here before you continue on down the page". It's just using good advertisement techniques. How are they any different than the backgrounds for ad blocks that draw a persons attention to them but those are still OK? Next to them, under them, what's the difference? I'm guessing this will rage on for a while as the rules continue to evolve. I guess I give the average surfer more credit than that.

I just checked my CTR's for yesterday and they were up 2% from the previous two days. I'm starting to think my initial data that told me the pictures helped increase my CTR's was flawed, at least on my main site, as removing the pictures and graphics has not made enough difference to really matter. I'm sure with every site that this will vary, but what it does at least say is that with good blending, the pictures only marginally helped improve it beyond that for me. I know when I first started to blend last year, my CTR's quadrupled immediately following and with some final adjustments after that, increased another 1% to where they currently are. I guess I just need to find another adjustment to get another 1 or 2% back now

It'll be interesting to compare a full months worth of data to see if that trend holds. Then at least if it does, there will be less to be angry about for those that thought the pictures made a "big difference" all things being equal over good quality blending alone.

The main problem will be that the SE spiders can't read it and get bored and go away without ever fully indexing your site because they can't understand it. Hence your site is ranked so low that it's back on the 15th page of the search engines for your search term. Now there are numerous tips for correcting this issue but this first is words. Spiders like words! They like words for content, they like wordy menu's and the more words you have that the spiders can use to decipher what your site is about, the better you'll rank in the SE's.

From Google's Site the new version can be found here but these two lines I think are paramount for those who have used pictures or graphical gimmicks on their sites. This is under the Encouraging clicks section of the page:

May not direct user attention to the ads via arrows or other graphical gimmicks
May not place misleading images alongside individual ads

The two partial sentences that I put in bold are of special interest to many. It has always stated that you could use arrow or pointers but it's now expanded to include "graphical gimmicks". I have seen and used some different graphical gimmicks in the past and low and behold I was warned last week to remove them as well some images that I had aligned with the ad blocks. The new changes how ever do not disallow the use of backgrounds for the blocks if you choose to do so good news for the people doing that.

I would suggest great caution if you continue use pictures of graphics that line up with you ads. If it helps anyone, to be honest when I removed the graphics, I saw less than percent drop in CTR so not much of a hit.

Gas Prices - Ecomonics at work or big rip off?

I know this post is a bit off topic but in many ways still has something to do with marketing efforts and adventures because it affects the pocket book and that affects all of our businesses and exploits. Anyway, did you you get a load of those gas prices this week!

I remember paying $3.35 a gallon this past summer and everyone saying that gas prices below $2.50 would never be seen again in our life time. Gas this afternoon in our small Midwest town was $1.87! That's darn near half of what it was less than a year ago. I know, it's probably just short lived but for the moment it's more money in every one's pocket book and that is always a great thing for our economy and withe slump we are in here in our great automotive driven state, anything that helps a little is a good thing.

I'm hearing lots of reasons from global warming to speculators but at any rate, it is definitely due to the current surplus and lower supply and demand for fuels in our area of the US. We had temperatures into the 40's well into early January this year and that is almost unheard of in a state that is usually in the low teens for a January average and 3 feet of snow on the ground.

What ever the reason, I hope it continues for a while and that we are all smart enough to not loose site of the need for alternate fuels for our automobiles and home heating needs. I get concerned that the emphasis is lost in times like these and forward progress in the areas of alternative fuels comes to a crawl.

Let's all be smart and continue to live as though the gas prices are still $3.50 a gallon and do our part to save our world for our children. I don't know if I ever or do now believe in global warming and the effects of fossil fuels on our global conditions, but know I care enough not to think it's worth risking our children and grand childrens future over it.

Website optimization tips

Unless you are Microsoft or Coca-Cola, it doesn't make a lot of sense to overly emphasize your company name in the title tags of you website. Generally, you are not are not searching for the ABC MP3 Company. They are searching for MP3 players in general and looking for a great deal or a convenient location or both.

It also help the vision impaired around you site too. Similarly, links on image maps (particular segments of graphic images) may also be missed by the robots.

This works to the advantage of your readers as well as giving the search engines better information about the content of your pages. This will help youo get properly placed for the correct keywords and phrases that you are targetting too. The more descriptive your text links are, the better they are for your users and the robots. One of the best methods of site navigation is to refer to the relevant pages of your site from within the text on your page, more or less "embedding them into the text", while linking to the pages using descriptive keywords.

Normally you will want your site to rank well for a variety of phrases and keywords. You can't stuff all of these keywords and search phrases in one headline or in one title tag. It will cause "indigestion" for both your viewers and for the search engines. A better strategy is to organize your website into different pages, with each page emphasizing a certain aspect of your activity.

Well it finally happened. I have received a letter from Google about a policy violation and guess what it referred to? Pictures next to the AdSense ads. Here's what I received yesterday:

"Hello,

While reviewing your account, we noticed that you are currently displaying Google ads in a manner that is not compliant with our policies. For instance, we found violations of AdSense policies on pages such as www.wm8c.com/acne_treatment.htm.

Publishers may not implement Google ads in a manner that disguises the ads in any way, for instance, by formatting neighboring content to look similar to the ads, or by making ads look like games or forum threads. Additionally, publishers may not attempt to associate specific images with the individual ads appearing on their sites. Such an implementation may confuse users who assume that the image is directly related to the advertiser's offerings.

Please make any necessary changes to your web pages in the next 3 business days. We also suggest that you take the time to review our program policies (https://www.google.com/adsense/policies) to ensure that all of your other pages are in compliance."

Now I love this program and I am grateful that it wasn't the dreaded banning letter and I immediately made the changes as requested. If you've read my blog recently, you would know that I had already switched from the pictures I was using, to a slow colored animated graphic. Evidently, this is also not acceptable with the new AdSense guide lines regarding graphics.

My advice? If you like AdSense, remove the graphics before they come knocking. It's not worth the risk to wait for them to tell you that you are in violation.

Acid Reflux Syndrome

Drugs for this are taken in the form of tablets or capsules, as a powder to be diluted in water or as injections and are used to treat stomach ulcers and a rather rare condition called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome as well as acid reflux. Adsense picture update from December

About two weeks ago I started an experiment after Google changed their stance on pictures beside the ad blocks. I decided to follow the new guide lines they set out at that time and remove any pictures that might be construed as misleading or confusing at that time and replace them with a very slowly animated colored bar which can be seen on my site at http://www.wm8c.com .

I had planned to do a full update after about a months time but decided to take a hard look at the first 10 days of January and see what effect this had on my Adsense CTR's over that same period. Well I'm happy to report that so far the results have been encouraging, and while I haven't seen an increase in CTR, I have only noticed a 0.5% change in the first 10 days of the experiment. I also have many pages with no graphic at all which will also be used as a comparison as I go.

If you are using Adsense to monitize your sites, then don't be afraid to experiment. While I feel that warnings would be given before they banned anyone for use of pictures, in the manner they now forbid, you probably want to avoid that if possible and make sure you comply from the beginning. I'll be back with an update at the end of the month as well but so far so good.
